NY, PA Under Extreme Heat Warnings
A heat advisory is in effect across parts of New York and Pennsylvania. The advisory affects Onondaga, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Broome, Bradford, Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wyoming counties, including cities such as Binghamton, Elmira, Towanda, Sayre, Watkins Glen, Hazleton, Waverly, Ithaca, Scranton, Owego, Tunkhannock, Syracuse, and Wilkes-Barre.
From now until 10 AM EDT Monday, a heat advisory is in effect with heat index values reaching up to 104. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from 10 AM to 8 PM EDT Monday with heat index values expected to reach up to 109. A second heat advisory will run from 8 PM Monday until 8 PM EDT Wednesday with heat index values up to 102.
Officials warn that hot temperatures and high humidity may lead to heat-related illnesses, noting that the highest heat indices are expected in urban valley locations. Overnight lows in the 70s are forecast to offer little relief.
Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned environments, avoid direct exposure to the sun, and check on family members, friends, and neighbors. Workers are encouraged to take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses.
